Why this sits on a web page at all

Because it changes what is possible on the site. A studio that has to commission motion externally will design a page that does not need any. Being able to make it means a hero can be something other than a photograph with text on top, and that the file is encoded properly rather than a 40 MB MP4 dropped in by someone who did not have to load it.

It is a genuine second discipline, three years of it, and it is listed last because most people reading this page need a website first.
